Who is your favourite defender in Barcelona of all time in their prime version?

Lusting_4_Life

Puyol.

mahdiiick

Hear hear

psalmjuan

For me it’s Puyol hands down

GreatSphinxofGuizar

Any way I can learn more about how he played? Is there an archive somewhere where I can watch his important games? YouTube highlights don't do justice to him

Akarshcg

Yeah u have to watch complete games.....just watch some from the pep and rijkaard era.....there was a moment in clasico i particularly remember where barca had a corner and madrid gained possession and started to counter, puyol sprinted all the way from opponent area to our own box and tackled Higuain who was about to shoot...it was crazy!

AbrahamUntitled

He was a leader, on and off the pitch. If I was to compare him to anyone, it would be to Leonidas in 300. He led, and the team followed to death for him. My legend, my captain.

Blaugrana1990

November 2009 Clasico. We won 1-0, goal of Ibra but Puyol was massive that game.

Haseebsyed19

https://youtu.be/0oNuqTfPjKQ Greatest PUYOL video i have ever watched. Shows how great of a legend he was both on and off the pitch.

ciumpalachia

This one is bad, literally not even 5 seconds of him actually playing. Its like somebody reading from wikipedia in an annoying american voice over while a slideshow from his instagram plays. There's way better clips out there, like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7G0IUw1g_k) thats top.

martinluther3107

no other option

NarrowBit3940

Best: Puyol Favorite: Rafa Marquez (elegant and great long range distribution)

Akarshcg

Puyol.....tough, fair, relentless, leader....not just my favourite defender but one of my favourite sportsman ever.....he is someone young aspiring defenders should look up to

davethepiloto

What I would give to experience him on our team again. Man was a true fucking warrior.

Akarshcg

Absolutely man

Connect-Cicada-7147

Dani Alves, different gravy altogether

tekkers_for_debrz

I love me some Dani alves. Man was key in El clasico against galacticos

vkanucyc

I’m convinced Alves is the most underrated Barca player during the glory years.

therealfakenews17

As a Madrid fan, I consider Dani Alves up with Cafu as goat RB Think he’s highly considered in the soccer world

vkanucyc

I would go as far and say I think he was THE main catalyst of the Barca revolution. Obviouisly a lot happened, Messi was blossoming, Pep was the new coach, and Xavi and Iniesta hit their prime... all big factors, but Alvez was maybe even more important than all of those factors. He DOMINATED that right flank and his link up play with Messi was insane. He was always available for the ball and still somehow managed to get back on defense, his aggressive defending style was great too because on counterattacks, he would commit fouls, but that allowed us to regroup. It was like we had 12 players on the field.

Abupapi

Man, don't make me cry, ronaldo was ineffective in classicos a lot, and guess who was responsible?

dzimbad

Puyol. He was a true leader.

MounirGharbia

Puyol and Rafa !

holahermano1602

Puyol for me . I wish I had the chance to witness koeman tho. So many interviews in which people always mention koeman immediately when they talk about the dream team under cruyff. The amount of goals he scored is unbelievable

victaahhh

Puyol ofc. Then Rafa Marquez and Mascherano

PeppaPig85210

Puyol then Mashcerano. super underrated player, he always gave his all and is one of the best pure tacklers of all time. he timed his slide tackles perfectly.

Upper-Replacement529

Puyol, hands down.

Salvador1010

Puyol. Always class

takalosh

Puyol by a mile

Valerex

Puyol, Piqué, Dani Alves.

PozPanero

Puyol and Koeman.

jdbcn

Yes. Definitely

frostedcat_74

Surprise Pique's not here yet. Also, i've not been a Barca supporter for a long time (started watching since Valverde), but how was Koeman as a player ?

Onsyde

Koeman was great actually. Pretty sure he has the record for most goals as a defender.

jlemke3

That man had a fucking rocket in his boot, and knew how to use it on free kicks.

Unlucky_Rider

>he has the record for most goals as a defender. You are correct.

vkanucyc

Is Puque the greatest ball playing center back ever?

atthebatman

In my opinion yes

vkanucyc

i think rafa marquez as CB isn't a good comparison because he was a pretty poor defensively as CB

Akash3642

That's when Beckenbauer comes. After him Pique is probably the best

anurag6ix

I remember watching puyol, so he is for me!

djishereonreddit

Puyol and pique they bleed red and blue I love those two

culerfincar

puyol for me

Tezemery

Puyol, Pique and Alves.

grad0ns

Puyol.

froggyjm9

Puyol and Rafa Marquez.

BrotherXerxes

The great Ronald Koeman

TheCrimsonGing

Favorite: Pique. Favorite full back line: Puyol, Rafa, Milito, Caceres. Best hair ever. Wasn't the best, but damn it, they looked the best

shane5758

Puyol always had that will to win and was always ready to give 100%.You could see this when he went for any goal scoring opportunity, you could actually see opposition players getting out of the way as they knew that he would go for the ball no matter what. Most noticeable was headers other players knew that he would commit 100% to head the ball so they would get out of his way.

jdbcn

Like someone said, it’s difficult to defend corner kicks from a wet sheepdog jumping over you

DARTH-GOLD-HIMSELF

Seriously??? Who else than the lion heart Carles Puyol !!!!

Kathyaafg

Rafa Márquez is the reason I started loving this club.

MyZt_Benito

Puyol, then el presidente

Jasvinder_SINGH

I followed Barcelona in last 3 years but I watched a couple of performances put up by Puyol he was an absolute beast

NonubsNoproblem

As everyone else puyol unquestioned, the pique lighter incident does it for everyone.

Mohaimin_H-2004

Puyol without any doubt

Cer3berus

i really liked umtiti and abidal

Aman_ar

Puyol, without a doubt! Leader, legend, love!

King-Cuco

Puyol \#1

Gluten_Free_Pancakes

Alves. He was superb and Messis top assister for a long time until Suarez detroned him. Alves also scored bangers from time to time, including one at a Clásico about 10 years ago which was insane. Alves was just class and the best right back in the world for a few years

A3A99

Puyol 100%. I think this sub is out of the age range to actually remember Koeman.

Ranjith_Unchained

Dani Alves

LookYouGotSpun

Alves = GOAT defender

Titan-Shifter99

Pique and Puyol...people sometime forget how good Pique has been for us.

saaga722

Puyol and Marquez was the perfect balance of ferocity and technique. They both were capable of scoring goals as well. Rafa even scored free kicks every now and then.

Ok-Refrigerator9272

Puyol for sure number 1. Then Masche and Rafa Marquez followed by Pique. Umtiti in his prime was absolutely beast as well, although obviously short lived, sadly. Koeman was a little before my time

martinezxcruz

dani alves 100%

jlemke3

My favorite defender, personally, is Piqué. Growing up playing as a defender and being a Barcelona fan, I have absolutely loved watching him. I wouldn’t say he’s the best Barça defender of all time, but definitely my favorite.

sarexxz

I agree, he's not the best but definitely my favourite

M1nusbarca

Central defenders definitely Puyol, Pique and Koeman. RB/LB Dani Alves and Alba.

praiseprince_

Puyol, Pique and Alves. I haven't seen Koeman play but his stats are unreal.

mobanga113

has to be puyol but since everyone’s saying him i’m gonna go piqué or dani alves

_sauri_

Surprisingly, Piqué. I was too young to have watched Puyol play in his prime, though I still have immense respect for him. I would've liked to see Koeman play too.

jdbcn

Both were amazing

wolf8808

Puyol and (showing my age here) Frank de Boer

jdinsaciable

It seemed like we couldn't lose with Puyol on the field. Marquez was a joy to watch, such an amazing technique and even clutch goals. Piqué is also a legendary player, probably will be considered the most talented and complete defender after he retires.

Not_Tom_Brady

Roi Abi

dmo_da-dude22

Puyol and Alves

868Alex

no love for Dani hmm

Xagrext

Dani alves. Probably best rb all time. He is just machine. Never tired.

Tesseraktion

Rafa Márquez not only a defender but he's the reason I'm still supporting this team!

thisIsAswin

Puyol and its not even close

Murvel88

Puyol, without a doubt!

[deleted]

Gerard Pique was untouchable in his prime.

stackmufin

Puyol

Andreasescobar

Puyol

Guido-Guido

Has to be Puyol.

kuantizeman

Puyol, then Migueli

kuantizeman

Shocking that you don't know about Nadal, Ferrer, Sergi, Migueli.....

Steve_IT

I don't think there are many users who are old enough to have watched them (and old enough to understand something about football), and I'd find it silly to say one of these names just because they saw some highlights videos

kuantizeman

You love something, learn the history. Fin.

Steve_IT

Learn who they were? Sure, and I think many people here know them, but if you find it shocking that nobody watches enough complete matches of the 70s/80s/90s to say these players are their favourites you'd find shocking many things. Fin

rares020102

Underrated choice: Mascherano

Artuhanzo

I am surprised I need to go all way down to see his name mentioned.

Juannieve05

My Mexican bias doesnt let me say anything else other than Rafa

AcceptableBrain5127

PIQUÉ

ieatshoes89

Migueli. [for those who don’t remember him. ](https://youtu.be/evMIGzLpjvM)

kuantizeman

Finally. Someone that did not start supporting Barça in 2010

northdakota1337

Jeremy Mathieu

talkingtomee

Everybody is saying Pyuol, but it's Pique for me. The first of a kind for a ball-playing center back who perfectly embodied the Barca style. CBs like him are in great demand now, but he was unique in his own time. Had a super long career at the top too. Considering CBs generally reach their peak later, Pique reached and held on to the top for soo long it's astounding. Character, class, and technique. Truly one of a kind. El presidente for sure.

olderaccount

The answers here give you a pretty good idea of the age range in this sub.

kuantizeman

High level of plastic. 1899 FCB

ScorpionTheSuperior

Umtiti

echoecho25

Dani Alves.

CassperNyovesthuizen

For me it’s Umtiti. The season before the 2018 World Cup he was unplayable. Great defending and line-splitting passes

TheGeniusArvind

Puyol, my man would put his life on the line to save a goal. Well that's all I know about him, I ain't old enough to see him in his prime. So pique from who I saw

roxutee

What? Puyol.

konald_roeman

I come from the future and I'm telling you it is De Ligt.

yofoalexillo

Dani Alves for me. Although Puyol close second

IAmMourningWould

Alves and Puyol. We forgot who we were after Alves left.

ATLFaithful53

Uhmmmm.. titi

damir_h

What kind of question is this?

CaramelFairy69

Probably Pique. I missed out on Puyol by the time I started following Barca although I did see him with Spain. But I just love Pique, he's a great defender and his off the field antics and trolling are some of my favorites

_urMumM8_

The best was Puyol but my favorite was Alba right after Neymar left and he imposed himself down the left wing to link up with Messi.

Abstract__Nonsense

I’m one of what I’m guessing is the majority here that wasn’t old enough to watch Koeman play, but the guy was a beast. As an attacking defender he exemplified total football and will always be a Barca legend.

newlifeonmars

My favorite is Mascherano. He was a warrior, willing to die on the field if it meant helping the club. Never seen a defender with so much heart.

neoceejay

dani alves

Sayom_23

Puyol ofc, apart from him I really liked Mascherano and Dani Alves, also Koeman who helped us to win our first European title.

Skylink87

Puyol is the only correct answer.

bruntur-san

Rafa Márquez

ismailovic10

Puyol Koeman Daniel Alves

Darduel

Is there any valid answer outside of our eternal capita Puyol?

PuzzleheadedTitle595

Puyol

barbarian005Alt

Puyol Is it even a debate

Rutuj24

Nelson semedo

EpicXplosive

Puyol and Koeman.

SnooCauliflowers5954

The Legendary Puyol!! He left it all on the field. You can see the passion, hard work ethic, and leadership qualities he had! He bled Blaugrana colors!

solman52

Puyol but as a Mexican also Rafa Marquez

Mesqueunclub101

Puyol of course. Rafa was pretty good too and I somehow fell in love with abidal and how calm he was

croquetiest

pique

U0logic

Abidal... In his prime he was a fucking monster. Both CB and LB.

ponysniper2

Is that even a fair question? The only answer is our spanish jesus/caveman, Puyol.

Kaunine

Any answer other than puyol is wrong

RiquiLeaks

Not koeman (just joking)

Dumbass1171

Pique 14-15 Edit: If we include full backs, then Dani Alves of course

drat_kcuf

We've had so many in recent years. I've only had a chance to follow Barca for the last 15-20 years, so I don't want to talk about players from before that. Three names really pop up for me, and they've been named many times in this thread already for obvious reasons, Puyol, Pique and Dani Alves. Puyol was probably the greatest leader of all time. Imagine being a captain of the best team in history of football. Not only he was a phenomenal defender, he had such an authority to hold whole team together that it's honestly incredible. You never heard any issues in the locker room. Never fights between the team and whenever team was losing or struggling, you could be sure that it's Puyol to step up and make sure the team never gives up or falls apart. On too of that he was one of the best CB's of his time too. Truly one of a kind and there will never be THAT kind of character for this or any other team. Pique truly, truly loves this club. He has said he wants to be a president in the future. He learned from Puyol how to lead this team full of superstars and how to lead the defensive line. In his prime he was definitely one of the top CB's in the world, and he's consistency is incredible. He's been our key player for 12-13 years now, he's been part of the best team ever, he has also been part of this Barca that is struggling with everything, and he is still a true captain and not jumping off of a sinking ship. European Champion, World Champion, 4x Champions League... Landed a sponsor deal with Rakuten, big supporter of Catalonia aswell and ALWAYS does what's best for the team. Dani Alves, simply the best right back of all times. In his prime, he had amazing link with Messi. Defence was his weakest point, and he was amazing in that area aswell. He had pace, dribbling, shooting and incredible link up plays with Messi. He has most trophies in history of a football for a reason. He could make any team better. Brazil, Barca and even in his older days Juve and PSG. Dest has shown great attributes but even if he becomes best RB in the world, Alves is the one he will be compared to.
