But how will I get his thank you if I don’t do the work first?

HehTheUrr

It seems that all of these end with "BLOCKED" like that will hurt the artists feelings or something. I just don't get what the CB's thought process could possibly be in this situation though... Does CB think that the artist will feel so terrible for turning them down (even after being told to die) that they'll contact through other means? Do they think that their nonexistant "business" is worth anything at all? Do they just want the last word? I wish someone like this would ever be self aware enough to provide an honest answer, though I doubt that will ever happen lol.

MeEvilBob

CB assumes that the artist will be dismayed by having such a *high profile client* turn them down. These are the same people who rather than hiring a professional landscaper, they'll offer a neighborhood kid $10 to mow their lawn then flip out that it isn't done to the same standards as a professional landscaper.

Shushishtok

I was that kid once ): one of the neighbors really flipped out on me, and honestly that broke my heart because I felt like I did such a good job for a 5th grade kid.

franciacca

you definitely did, that neighbor was just an asshole

Shushishtok

Probably, yeah. At least he still paid, so that's something I guess.

I hate that guilt trip that CBs use. "Aren't I worth the time?....but we are friends, don't I mean more to you than money?.....i was sooo nice to you...."😑😰

allyouneedarecats

One of my friends has a big-time Etsy store in the niche hobby we're both into. I still pay full price for things from him, because it's his freaking *full-time job*. He'll occasionally give me a discount on something (or a free thing for my birthday), but I can't imagine not wanting to help a friend out!

CoMaBlaCK

You’d be surprised how even your closest friends don’t understand the concept of paying you for a service or product. You know all those single moms trying to peddle 3D lashes on Facebook? I’m sure that must be toughest for them.

xaiha

I wouldn't charge my close friends because I know they wouldn't charge me. But I'd pay for the services of acquaintances because I might not be able to repay the favor in kind, and because I value their time. Edit: respect the value of their time sounds better I think.

CoMaBlaCK

I’m of the thought that you should pay more if a close friends doing it because you don’t want any resentment from them. I had a friend volunteer to do a baby room from scratch for another friend as a gift but after spending hours a day for months after work, working on the thing it ruined their friendship.

CopperPegasus

I was once told 'what has no visible price tag has no value'. It's sadly true. Friend a can know friend b is the world's hottest, most in demand interior designer ever, but if they offer to do it free... the value of what they get is perceived at $0. It's weird, but it's true. When I still performed regularly, I took to issuing a regular invoice and all normal paperwork, even to charity and free performances. Sure, I discounted to 100% so there was a 0 balance, but there is a perceptible change in attitude between 'We are getting this thing valued at x for free' and 'they are working for free'.

DrRocksoo

When I was a waiter, I never expected a discount from the bartender, but if there was one, the money saved would always go to the tip.

theroadlesstraveledd

Real friends pay full price

redalastor

Or exchange against equivalent services.

Darth7urtle

You should link the store so we can send the reddit hug of death!!

Ravenhaft

Hmm. I remember one time my friend was taking all his games to Gamestop. He got like $80 or something for them and I said “why didn’t you sell them to me for that price? I’d have paid it.” He got SUPER offended that I’d scam him out of his valuable games for such a low price. And I’m like “ok dude but like then you’d have money and it’s not like you’d never be able to play them again, I’d be happy to loan them to you”. So you’d rather sell to -big faceless corporation- instead of your friend? Then he blocked me even though we’d been friends since we were kids idk what was with that dude.

JuvenileEloquent

>I’d scam him out of his valuable games for such a low price. GameStop: $80 for the lot. Him: OK Sir Thank You! You: $80 for the lot. Him: Get OUT you SCAMMER!!!1! ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

WereWolf_Jones

My guess is he offered to sell them to you for $100 or something and you said no and he got upset and rage sold them to gamestop for pennies on the dollar.

[deleted]

Now go re-buy them from Gamestop. Expensive, but worth it if he ever talks to you again asking about those games. Whether to use them to mock him, or to dramatically mark them up. Or simply enjoy them.

OlbapNamles

>I can't imagine not wanting to help a friend out! It isn't even "helping" its just respect and common sense, products and services cost money

[deleted]

I always compensate my friend for her crafting ability too. She keeps telling me I don't need to but that's her source of money and I feel bad thinking about taking advantage of our friendship.

allyouneedarecats

My boyfriend's mom does lace making/tatting/wool spinning. She gave me a beautiful hand-tatted bookmark for my MA graduation. Like even if she charged minimum wage for it, it'd still be an expensive piece of string. I can't imagine begging people for something it takes time and effort for them to make.

Overexplains_Everyth

I got a friend I've known for 25 years. Hung out 5+ hours 7 days a week for like 17 of those years. Still pay for shit he does.

skittle-brau

True friends want to see their friends succeed and live well.

CopperPegasus

You, sir/madam/whatev, are a very, very rare creature. Unicorns are less rare then you. I have two home businesses. Not one of my friends expects to pay full price. Nor do I see a tit-for-tat rise in them sharing and promoting any of it, either. We're just their convenient local IT hookup. Despite this literally being the food on our table, we couldn't POSSIBLY charge a GOOD FRIEND full price, right? right? Oh, it would be nice if I at least told my other friends how awesome you were? Huh? Why would I do that? So, sir/madam/whatev... thank you. You are a rare person and the world needs more of you.

CoMaBlaCK

Selling to ‘friends’ is much worse because they feel they can get over on you or shouldn’t have to pay.

Northernderp

Absolutely bang on bud I worked as a Sky tv installer a few years ago & had to tell friends I was too busy to work for them due to the amount of "friends" wanting me to install multiroom & other bits & bobs for next to nothing or quite literally nothing in a lot of cases. I think they thought I enjoyed giving up my free time to climb up ladders onto there roofs often in the wet, cold & windy conditions (this is England after all) as if I'd rather be doing that than sat in my own house in the warmth with my feet up having a beer after a hard days work & then think they were doing me a favour by giving me £20 for 2 hours of my time, after that happened a couple of times I was always far too busy to work for any friends ever again.

Samuel_Reeves

Not too long ago I had a "friend" who brings me his work laptops for me to fix them. I did it twice as a favor but the dude thought it's a free pass for life. When I refused to do the repairs for free again, he tried to shame me at my friend's coffee shop while forgetting I'm a certified asshole. I tore him a new one that day in front of everyone, he never came back to the coffee shop since then.

BigtiddyGothGrrl

That’s for damn sure. I used to practice tarot reading on friends way back in high school, and even though I’m 1000 miles away and a couple decades out, I still do readings, but professionally now. I still do them for my closest friends without charging. The same people who ignored me in school heard that I used to don “free readings” and guess what... twice a year I get a sentence or two of pleasantries followed by “so can I get a free reading, since you used to give them 15+ years ago but never gave me one?” From the same dozen people like clockwork. (I tell them I’m too busy to take on new, ahem, *customers*.)

drivingmscrazy

Forreal. You would think an actual friend would want to value you and your skills and pay you for a job well done. Double standards, yo

Kung-FuCaribou

I pay extra to get my tires fitted by a buddy of mine. He's just started an independent shop and it's pricey, but performance is his business and I *know* he'll do it right. Support your friends, folks.

RadSpaceWizard

Arkanius84

Health care is not free, you still pay it with the tax money, but I got what you meant.

Firekracker

It's strange that he mentions Germany since Germany doesn't have the "the customer is always right" mentality. Quite the opposite in fact, it is you who enters a store and wants something, so you are the one who has to pay respect first. After all *you* want something from *them*. So you meekly approach the counter where the two clerks are yapping about private shit and wait for them to finish. If you try to interject you'll be barked at with an unfriendly "WAS?" and any questions will be answered with a "HAMA NICH!". What are you going to do after all, go to a different store? Of course in the last fifteen years Amazon and the other digital marketplaces have become more prevalent so you could in fact go to a different store, but Germans are slow learners and it will be a while before the mentality in stores changes.

erik_brugal

Well, that's how we ride here in G to the Err-money. No but seriously, I follow subs like CB and entitled bitches for a couple of weeks now. I am baffled by this whole "I need to speak to your manager" stuff. I've never heard any of that in Germany. A "no" is a "no", we don't fuck around here. If anything, it's really the cashiers who treat customers like shit, not vice versa. Just imagine, a 150kg walrus dressed as a female REWE cashier, absolutely hating her job and leeting you feel it, you most certainly don't want to mess with her.

Duetzefix

Ah, the less touristy areas of Berlin, how I miss them. 😁 Here in southern Germany everyone in customer service is nice, it's so unsettling. Like I've stepped into the Twilight Zone or something.

LSD2019

I'm from Germany and i did never hear that graphic design is free over here. Sure a few programs are but not if somebody else is doing it for you!

usagibunnie

But he was so nice! He should get free groceries and free rent just because "he's nice" too!

Werty_Rebooted

And half Poland.

lucas24709

(I'm not German) Yes, yes. In Germany this is how our anthem goes: In Germany, services should be free, And the one putting in work should pay for me And if they deny, And won't pay, Crop out the water marrrrrrk, And say "have a good dayyyyyyy"

TackyPotato

I am German and that's like totally our motto. Was du heut nicht willst bezahlen, musst du morgen schon nicht kaufen. Ok but seriously, I'm sorry OP had to deall with that asshole.

IndigoMichigan

Translating that into German is super fun! In Deutschland, frei ist die servicieren, und fur mich du willst pay! Und if du deny mein paymentieren, Ich willst krop die waßermarken! Und ich willst Sprachen "habe ein gut taaaaaaaag!" Those who speak German will know ❤ Edit: grammar. My bad. Mein Deutsch ist rusty af!

Snuggbug

>Those who speak German will know Like none of it was German lol

IndigoMichigan

I think you'll find most of it was German! Just really *bad* German, with psuedo-English-Germanic make up words and terrible grammar. As was the joke! There were, like, only 7 words in the whole thing which weren't German!

Silver_Keyboard

Dude check your Grammatik. That‘s not rostig as fuck. That‘s not even bad german. That‘s bestenfalls scheisse as fuck german. Bestenfalls.

Brombeere

Wtf... no usualy germans know very well to pay their artist. If not i send them away with a good luck wish to find someone else.

BluryDesign

Yep, most of Germans I’ve worked with was really kind to me

ZebrasGonnaZeb

The "we do not pay for this kind of job in my country" leads me to believe that, while this CB may live in Germany, they are not from here originally. I have met quite a few people here who like to behave like they're still in their native country and don't think that the societal norms here apply to them.

[deleted]

I would really love to see this country where not being paid for your work is considered the norm. Venezuela maybe?

scarymum

Well... I live in the middle east, and there are people from other countries as well that want to pay you on IOUs... It also isn't uncommon for employers to go months without paying and withholding commission checks. My friend has to get in shouting matches and harass her employers so she and her employees can get paid.

Gaderael

Well, Germans know first hand what can happen when an artist gets upset.

m0n0t0ne0ne

You don't waste any resources?! This person is absurd and doesn't recognize time as the most important resource.

warm_applepie

Nice guy+CB

swarleyknope

These kinds of posts make me cringe on a whole other level, because they remind me of the kinds of texts my ex sends. Super nice & complimentary until I don’t respond & then a string of insults with the occasional threat thrown in.

HehTheUrr

Why not block them at that point? Who needs the stress?

swarleyknope

Because he’s scary enough to me that I want to know if I need to be watching my back. 😕 He has some mental health issues & goes through periods where he gets really fixated/obsessed with me - fortunately the messages have dropped from every few weeks to every couple of months now. (Originally it was also to try to get evidence for a restraining order, but the attorney & cops said that it does nothing to actually keep me safe and that serving a restraining order usually just makes men angrier, so puts women at greater risk)

HehTheUrr

Oh god, I'm so sorry you have to go through all of that. Its unfortunately true, restraining orders are only respected by people who respect the law, and if not they just serve to piss dangerous people off. Please stay safe out there ❤

swarleyknope

Thank you so much for your kind reply! 💓

Lord_Derpenheim

Ive done light writing work for indie games. This shit happens all the time. If its for someone I know personally, I usually charge less or do some extra stuff when it comes to it. Unless they ask for said discount or extra work. Then its a big no no.

_teach_me_your_ways_

Exactly. I’m more than willing to go the extra mile for a friend... that is, until they demand it.

SabrinaFaire

If you're not paying for something, then you're not a customer. You're just a freeloader.

Witchynana

That always gets me. I am a customer. No, when you start paying me money you are a customer. When you are just demanding freebies you are a waste of time.

LostSoldier212

Lol "I'm a customer" would indicate payment of some kind other than "Thanks" or "Danke". He should have said "I'm an entitled jerk, I demand free work that I will later complain about anyway!"

Synnerxx

“ I was real nice to you”. And also I tried to lie to get free stuff. Guess I have a different definition of being nice.

Planeswalkercrash

thefenriswolf24

"You dont waste any resources.... It will only take you and hour or two" So. Time isn't a resource anymore huh? Got it.

Liquios

"We don't pay people for this kind of job in my country" What the fuck? He's from Germany - I assume (as you mentioned Germany) - and he's definitely wrong. We definitely DO pay this kind of job.

Ill_Consequence

I love how CB's always write blocked at the end like they think the person was going to try and keep talking.

Disastrous_Lobster

This mentality from "customers" seems much more prevalent to me when dealing with a service vs. a tangible good. I don't understand why many people expect others to do work for free...would they go to a restaurant and ask that their food be free as well? Nevermind, they probably do that too...

quasimoomoo

They're the ones that go in, eat 95% of the meal, say it didn't taste good, and expect to be comped.

filippojf

We do not have showers in my country. Go die

stafax

I am a customer who isn't paying your because you're just clicking a mouse.

MrDoggo75

He got dat "Can i speak with your manager?" energy

st15jap

I always see one common theme here. The CB always say they are going to block the people the are begging to do free work, as if they are going to hit them up and beg to do their work for free.

[deleted]

This person is having difficulty with the subtle difference between a customer and a beggar.

gwh811

So ah...... go click the mouse your self and get the design you want. I mean not like people go to school for graphic design and go into debt to pay for it. And the industry wants 3-5 years experience. But hey you wanna do this for free.

mr_darito

I have a computer repair business and it makes my blood boil when people (whether they're my friends or even worse, a distant relative or a friend of a relative) asks me to do a virus check, replace a part, install printer after printer, set up their brand new computer. I mean, I'll help you when I can but dont be messaging me or calling me every couple of weeks. You do know this is my job right, that's how I make a living, rigth?

Lexalina132

"It's only clicking a mouse, no big deal!" Lol, okay, then YOU DO IT YOURSELF FOR FREE XD i will never understand these kinds of people. If it's so easy, stop being a damn parasite and do it yourself for free.

Seventy_x_7

I would love to see you graphic designers responding to these beggars that if they want free art, what’s stopping them from doing it themselves? If it’s “just clicking buttons” then surely they’re not too stupid to make their own logo. Perhaps a canned response for when they ask for free work. “I paid for my degree, my tools and licenses are not cheap, and I know the value of my time. I do not work for free, and my price is not negotiable. I charge $x/hour, and 50% is due upfront when work begins. These policies are common and fair, and I won’t waste my time arguing about whether or not you should pay me to work for you. Goodbye.” And then block them. If they joke about paying you with a smile or expecting you to do it for the exposure, you have nothing further to gain from that conversation.

Voidrith

If you aren't willing to pay....well, you aren't a customer.

Eletroe12

dude... you got blocked... are you ok?

frankie_cronenberg

I like how “an hour or two” is considered nothing despite the fact that time is literally the ONLY truly finite resource we have...

luckyveggie

If it’s “just clicking” and would “only take an hour or two” why doesn’t he do it himself? Oh, because he doesn’t know how or have the skill set? Maybe he should pay a professional to-ooohh wait a minute

LostSoldier212

Lol "I'm a customer" would indicate payment of some kind other than "Thanks" or "Danke". He should have said "I'm an entitled jerk, I demand free work that I will later complain about anyway!"

narsfweasels

You’re not a customer until you agree with the payment terms...

Marshmallow920

It still completely blows my mind - and I’ve seen this a thousand times on this sub - that people block *you* when they’re the ones spamming messages! Like, blocking is something you use on annoying people who you don’t want to hear from. How do all these CBs rationalize this themselves? “This person isn’t answering me, I should block them! That makes the most sense!” Just don’t get it 🤦‍♀️

Fnshow316

I feel like they are so petty that it’s their way of getting the last word. I never understand why they warn you about it. I’d be more mad if I was delivering my comeback only to see myself blocked. Pissed
