Zappe was throwing 2 yeards behind where people were supposed to be.

NoHalfPleasures

Shaun Wade played really well I thought.

OrganicDrone

I’ve loved Wilkerson and he looked great again last night. Not sure what his future is but I’d like to see him against regular starters at some point

bassistmuzikman

He caught 3 TDs vs the Jaguars last year... does that count?

BstnIrshGy

2

Commercial_Pickle105

We should’ve called our timeouts with a minute on the clock.

The_Escape

Yeah but i kinda like peak idgaf belichick

Dunkinmydonuts1

Lol

Evolve-Tactical

Hopefully all the injuries yesterday make a quick recovery - I look forward to healthy matchups this year! \- A Bills Fan

DrRaschy

Zappe is mimicking the Flacco underthrow experience the best I've seen in the past few years.

paraplegic_T_Rex

I’m here for the overreactions to a practice squad matchup, both negative and positive. Y’all are crazy

FantasyTrash

That's Zappe for you. Mediocre arm talent but a smart player and pocket passer.

Mrtrgn

How was the OL? Did starters play or not?

Bloated_Hamster

A couple pretty big injuries. Strange was the only projected starter to take snaps but David Andrews was technically active but coaching in some of the huddles.

Chichipato69

In-game injuries? Or do you mean they were hurt going in?

Most_Rip_8599

In-game. Cajuste looked okay-ish, got up after rolling around a bit. I think Herron (?) looked significantly hurt, still got up and limped off. And there was another guy who came in that limped off. Technically backups, but I mean, even minor injuries to the O-line sucks to see in a preseason game.

BstnIrshGy

Everyone was “technically active” they don’t declare inactives in preseason

Keyann

Also, people bitching about two different play-callers in a game need to pump the brakes for a second. Bill is going to use these games to evaluate everything and everyone on the team and on his staff. This is precisely the correct time to figure out who is the better play-caller going into the regular season.

Icy-Conclusion-3500

Yeah we had two different QBs too.. I won’t why 🙄 It’s preseason, guys.

Keyann

Watched the highlights. Zappe makes some good throws and his ball placement is very good I thought, shakey at the beginning but really did well in the end. He will do just fine in the league.

jimbo_jumbo95

Zappe was nervous first half but looked very very good second

justamobileuserhere

Send joejuan to the jags or something

Pernyx98

What a surprise, the defensive genius who won many games with great defensive playcalling might know how to call plays against other defenses? Surely this is impossible? Bro I swear watching the meltdowns the past 2 weeks by Boston sports radio and shows were hilarious.

IdiotCow

Was BB calling plays or are you calling Matt Patricia a defensive genius?

Icy-Conclusion-3500

😂

Kodiak01

A good way to make the talking heads sputter is to remind them that McDaniels started out on the defensive side as well.

Vinzembob

And Patricia started out as an offensive assistant and won a superbowl ring with us in 2004 in that role. Also acted as OL coach I believe.

TheOneTrueBuckeye

Joejuan is about to be toast, both because he was playing in this game and wasn’t playing well in this game.

1minuteman12

That 2019 draft is a ROUGH one looking back at it. Yikes.

StonedWater

lol he got hooked for a few reps in preseason - ouch

TheOneTrueBuckeye

When all the other starters aren’t playing and you are, that’s….not a good sign.

caperate

Hes so dogshit lmao

bostonbangouts

Another awful draft pick by Billy boy smh

RollTideRoll696969

Looking forward to Felger and Maz saying this clearly proves we will not win a single game this year 😂

fist_my_muff2

People who still listen to sports talk radio baffle me.

CA_Mini

It's just Felger, who wasn't born here, so his shtick is to find the negative to every story each day. The rush Limbaugh of sports. Max and others just follow his take because that's the show

CrippleH

If they bend over backwards for everything it wouldn’t be entertaining

Prestigious-Yam-993

Yep

VodkaAunt

I need an immediate gif of that zoom in shot on Pat Patriot's ass

timnog

[Pat Posterior](https://gfycat.com/uncomfortablevigilantcapeghostfrog)

VodkaAunt

God bless you

Nervous-Context

Sorry what?

VodkaAunt

4th quarter, :50 on the clock

Green-Largo

Still….”sorry what?”

Icy-Conclusion-3500

A zoom shot on Pat Patriot’s ass

DerpyMcDerple

How did Mack Wilson do for you guys?

bigatrop

He looked very good. He’s going to bring a ton of speed and athleticism that Hightower didn’t have last season. Looking like a solid pickup.

iscreamuscreamweall

He’s a starter so he didn’t play much but they had him blitzing and he was seemingly very effective

BstnIrshGy

He’s not a starter. I question whether he even makes the team based on how low on the depth chart he was at Tuesday’s practice. He still has time to improve that, though.

iscreamuscreamweall

Remind me in 3 weeks when he’s starting vs Miami

BstnIrshGy

Ok let’s do that. Who sits Bentley or McMillan?

polynomials

Watching Zappe made me appreciate Mac even more. Zappe isn't horrible but it's clear he is not a Day 1 starter, unlike Mac.

whydontyouloveme

I only caught the 4th quarter. I thought he looked pretty good, but my pats fan bartender friend told me that he wasn’t. Glad there’s some hope. Hoyer isn’t going to live forever, he’s already like 75, right?

Giblaz

Agreed. Don't sleep on Zappe though. He looks laser focused out there and was on the same wavelength as the coaches and the other guys on offense. His deep balls in college were sick and he had some of those passes go off this game. I want to see more of his pump fakes incorporated into his play. He has some absurd hard pumps he did in college that got guys wide open.

Cashios

Dope name though

MINJAH139

Imagining all the analysts now with the puns: "He's got some Zappe to the arm, unlike Mac's Peashooter" - Rex Ryan In 2 weeks

crod2316

Lil’ Jordan became one of my favorite names last season

Money-Stacks-Salvia

I’m fond of Captain Munnerlyn

TheRealSlimBrady12

We lost a pre-season game where our starters didn't play by 2 points. GG Season is over. Pack it up boys. Better luck in 2023. FF@15

Control_Director91

FF@15 - I don’t miss those days 😂😂

ogorangeduck

We'll get 'em back for those Super Bowls one of these days!

DaveInDigital

when are people gonna learn Brady was the Patriot Way? Bill is a nobody without him!! /s

wedge72696

No love for #36 Elliot? Guy was all over the field.

andresfelipesv

He was in seemeingly every play. I hope it wasn't one of those situations were a db gets targeted, and his assignment makes catches, so he ends up having a lot of tackles.

Bellegr4ine

Felt like this on a couple of plays. Especially on Mitchell side.

Justmyopinion246

Pleasantly surprised by Sam Roberts, our 6th round rookie DL. Seemed to get good penetration on passing plays and mostly hold his ground on running plays (besides when he got double teamed, but he never got completely demolished). Struggled with tackling, but it seemed a lot of the team did and he got himself into a good position a few times. I’m just a dude who played D-line in high school, but I’m excited to see how he does next week.

IcyMcl3itch

I was primarily watching for him and Thornton as they are my favorite draft picks. Definitely happy with what I saw

qball-who

Isn’t he like 3rd sam Robert’s we’ve had?

sleepyj910

You are thinking of Robert Sam

StonedWater

You are thinking of Sobert Ram

Bloated_Hamster

You are thinking of the LA Rams' Sorbet

Durandal_7

You're thinking of director Sam Raimi.

qball-who

Might have been elandon roberts

Regular-Habit-1206

Ok so can we all agree now that our offense is not the shit show that everyone thought it's going to be? I mean we put up 21 points with rookies and backups. Add in Mac, KB, Damien, Devante and everyone else and we're going to be just fine

Green-Largo

No, the media needs to sustain the panic for ratings, so we can’t all agree.

gchurst

I don’t think we can take away much from this game tbh

KnowledgeBomb

I will only agree that whatever happens, it was inevitable.

tripp_hs123

Wasn't the Giants defense also all backups though?

Regular-Habit-1206

Pretty sure they had a couple starters in the first few drives when Thornton caught that TD. People need to realize that we could've put Hoyer in all game and the outcome would have been wildly different, we intentionally put in Zappe who is rightfully nervous and played a terrible first half. Overall we shouldn't analyze too much into this game and my only takeaway is that the offense is miles ahead of what those reporters were suggesting it was in camp

StonedWater

yep - if Hoyer had have stayed in, easy win

Griffisbored

My take aways: Tyquan is legit Strange looked great RB group is deep Zappe has a noodle arm Wilkerson looked better than Nixon imo

Most_Rip_8599

Backup DL handled Saquan pretty well too IMHO, that was my biggest takeaway from the first quarter.

GoOnThereHarv

Wilkerson definitely passed the eye test. Tyquan might be a stud or at least a legit threat. I agree our RB group is solid.

adelvalle1993

I was most excited to watch Tyquan and that speed. I need mroe of it

sm2016

My Tyquan hype train has officially left the station. This guy is the real deal. Great separation, great hands. He doesn't get off of press coverage fantastically yet but what a nightmare for zone coverage or on deep routes for long plays. I think he's gonna be a beast yall

yadigyadigyadigyadig

I think he’ll be good but he had 2 catches today lol

Tellsyouajoke

Probably had another deep one if not for the defensive holding in the 1st quarter. The next play they ran the exact same play and Wilkerson caught it

Catamount90

2 catches today, however, I read he’s only had 6 catches in 7v7 and 11v11 all camp, so that’s a good split for him

theMagatron

I thought that was 6 catches from Mac, no?

ICantFekkingRead

Correct

olollort

I keep drinking the Kool-Aid I bought in the moment we drafted him

adelvalle1993

all aboard

deadmoosemoose

Thornton looks fuckin gooooood. Burned Robinson do hard.

NEPatsFan128711

Fun game to watch, liked McGrone and the overall speed at LB. Good stuff

FantasyTrash

Guys, do you not realize the literal only offensive starter was Cole Strange? Every single other player was 2nd string or lower. Of course the offense isn’t going to look spectacular. And Belichick openly has said he does not game plan preseason games, so the play-calling was very vanilla.

WarWolf343

I watched till about midway through the second quarter. I liked what I saw from Uche, Jennings, and McMillan.

SupahVegetto

Zappe's throws felt very strange lol.

LionoftheNorth

Hoyer's throws felt very onwenu lol.

Calfzilla2000

Mac's throws for the wynn!

Abbsis

Kinda reminds me of Tebow

flourinmypockets

They all seemed super under thrown, I give way more credit to the recievers

BostonsLeprechaun

I agree but the announcers were praising the hell out of him I felt like

sevaiper

I mean that is their job

yadigyadigyadigyadig

You must have never heard Zolak talk about Cam

StonedWater

he doesn't like his black boys with a personality - they make him feel uneasy he likes a nice Sweetfeet - quiet and respectful in the corner

yadigyadigyadigyadig

Lol yup. No dancing to music at practice!!!

fourpuns

WR: Thornton looked good. I saw one drop in the highlights that was maybe pass interference. He was creating separation like crazy- take it with a grain of salt as Wilkerson was also perpetually open. Nixon had some good plays but a drive killing easy catch went in between his hands and off his chest. Having just watched highlights I don’t feel qualified to say much more.

StonedWater

thornton got open against 1st/2nd team wilkerson - 3rd/4th then 5th team

MankuyRLaffy

Outside Post on the right side did look like free real estate yeah, Tyquan does look legit though

quikfrozt

So how has the new blocking schemes and offensive tweaks looked in action? Any big changes from last season?

Bloated_Hamster

It's basically impossible to say how the offense will look when there is a single starting offensive player trying to execute the scheme. It's basically useless information.

Badger623

the offense looked the exact same as the last 20 years, nothing different for now

Its_kinda_nice_out

They couldn’t really run block at all, so early returns not great

ecupatsfan12

Our receiving corps doesn’t look bad Our DL and CBS look good Only real problem is our ground game. We may need to add a FB and run more gap scheme. All in all for as dire as it seems it looks like our defense is very good and we have a correctable problem Feel much better watching live

adelvalle1993

ground game will be better when we have a full line of starts and have DH and RS in there as well

robshot295

Pats lost a meaningless preseason game with hardly any of their starters in…QUICK, LET’S PANIC ABOUT THE TEAM GOING TO SHIT!!!

Savagemanu92

I want tre Nixon on the final roster

Ortman55

Nixon VS Wilkerson in a battle to the death

Bojangles1987

I just still can't understand why Wilkerson never got more chances last season. Is he great? Obviously not, but he's clearly got potential and is capable of being a weapon some weeks.

StonedWater

he hs done well with every opportunity

SquishThePhish

More like battle to the *depth* amirite

Ortman55

Ayyyyy

emotionalfescue

One or both could be stashed on the practice squad with protection from poaching, right? They probably wouldn't want to protect both guys though.

Ortman55

Gotta get them to the PS first and that would be no easy task

emotionalfescue

Most teams are in the same boat after final cutdown, they don't have enough roster spots for all the guys they really wanted to keep. As time passes, though, players get injured and poaching gets serious.

Griffisbored

Wilkerson>Nixon

FutureF123

Line improved as the night went on. Corresponded with a better Zappe too. Major concern on LBs still. We have speed but not the same run-stopping force. CBs as always are studs.

ace72ace

Looking forward to Bedard’s cogent analysis on Fatloss & Madd next week on the Sportspud. As a former lineman back in the day, I appreciate how Bedard does his job and spends time on the boring line play and schemes. We won our first 3 Super Bowls with a monster defense and some 6th round QB out of Michigan, and our last 3 with the matured GOAT QB, and a defense that was good enough and coached up to their strengths. Barring injury, Buffalo should win the division, and the Pats are looking at a 9-8 record this year.

Consol-Coder

We must always have old memories and young hopes.

mahk99

Peppers didnt play tonight either and hes supposed to be an lb for us atleast at times

EasyasYes_

Garbage tbh mfs need to get the ol in order zapass is all nervous 2nd/3rd string is trash , just not good tbh

Blaze2444

Only r/patriots could lose their shit over 1 preseason game where the starters don't play

EasyasYes_

Seasons done next year

XRT28

Initial thoughts. **Winners**: Mack Wilson. Seemed to be everywhere when he was out there. Uche. Consistently got pressure on the QB. Still not sure if he's fixed his issues vs the run enough to be a fulltime starter tho. Nixon. Most consistent WR out there tonight and also seemed to play a lot on ST which helps his value. Had a couple balls he should have reeled in tho. Jack Jones. nearly had a couple picks and was otherwise invisible(which is typically a good thing for your CBs since it usually means their guy isn't getting open) Ekuale/Davis/Ray. All 3 looked solid on the DL with Ekuale in particular looking good at collapsing the pocket. **More good than bad**: Thornton. Had a limited number of snaps/targets but his speed was evident out there and snagged a TD. Wilkerson. Looks good with the ball in his hands. Seemed somewhat hot and cold and abit worrisome the majority of his "hot" moments were later vs 4th/5th stringers. McGrone. Showed good speed for the position but also seemed very reactive rather than proactive like he either struggling processing or just not trusting his gut. Ward. Some good coverage. Also got beat a bit but even when beat was never really badly beat and also had some nice breakups. Jennings. Work in progress but he was noticable(not in a bad way) much more than he was last year. Julien. Barring injury won't be playing here but looked good punting the ball and wouldn't be surprised to see him get a job somewhere. **Meh**: Zappe. Terrible first half took way too long to process and his throws were all over the place. 2nd half he looked vastly better(especially when the OL was able to hold their blocks) but still lots of accuracy issues. Good bounceback but still very much a long term developmental guy. Perkins. Other than a couple decent defensive snaps on QB rollouts late in the game didn't seem particularly active. **Losers**: OL depth(OT in particular). Pass protection was iffy for a good stretch of the game and no push in the run game throughout and making matters worse both Cajuste and Herron got dinged. The run game. I'm not sure if it's the new scheme(in general or more specifically the OL), lack of FB, or the players/execution but it was ugly and consistently ugly regardless of who was out there.

StonedWater

> Mack Wilson. Seemed to be everywhere when he was out there. unfortunately in the first qrt, he was late to everything 2nd qrtr was vast improvement

Adoctorgonzo

For a fourth (?) Round pick in his first ever NFL game I was actually impressed with Zappe. Thought he looked better than meh given what my expectations were.

Vegetaf

I'd give a shout to Humphrey as well, had some good catches and actually was pretty decent as a "big slot" guy.

crowman2020

I like what I saw from the receivers that played tonight. Also thought the pass rush was better than I thought I would see.

ADryMuffin

Nixon impressed.

samacora

Sort of happy the patriots didn't try and drag the game out at the end. Seemed like a lot of injuries to the knees and legs of the lineman, better to rest them up than risk more stupid shit happening for a glorified practice

whydontyouloveme

Was worried watching 2 or 3 olinemen go down in the 4th. Depth has always been our saving grace on the oline recently and even the players going down in the 4th quarter might eventually play a few back up snaps during the season.

JohnDorian11

Also they covered

cam7595

Definitely was upset at first, but then had the same feeling. We saw just about everything we needed to see for an initial preseason game

Abbsis

Great point. Rookies already had opportunities to compete and showcase their skill set, why drag out a meaningless game lol.

CilviaDemoAOTD

100% plus I’m ready to go to bed, no need to drag it out

Vegetaf

Thank you for being sane/rational, can always count on you samacora!

xBMTHxMOVEx

Damn bro no matter whos at QB we just lose at the end to the giants. Frustrating to say the least. Not sure how to feel about this loss /s Kidding its pre season who cares loved just seeing the team on the field, makes me want to play madden til the season starts

Perswayable

We lost. Season over. Waiting till next year.

NaffRespect

Get this guy a gig with Boston sports media!

EasyasYes_

Lmaooooo

iscreamuscreamweall

first day off in weeks, felt so good to just zone out with a patriots game on at home.

Phantom255x

Zappe looked a lot better in the 2nd half. Maybe it was the nerves early which is very understandable. Also we had 3 timeouts at the end, why not use them???

MankuyRLaffy

He's a rookie and it's first start jitters, happens to everyone.

nerd44

They wanted to just end that thing. They saw enough.

Smartman971

Lame ending but overall looked really good, we didn't use starters. The 3rd string o and d lines were the weakest aspects and hopefully we don't have to see them too often. WR room is absolutely stacked. It's great to have talent there again.

AfterReview

Win or lose means absolutely nothing in preseason. It's all about getting game speed reps for guys that will make the 53, and by the end of the 4th in game 1, we won't see many of those guys when the games count

rsjpeckham

Nixon nice. Zappe nicer. No confetti and fans on the field. Nicest.

CONSTANTIN_VALDOR_

I thought Zap looked a little wild when he first came on, settled nicely

sviraltp7101

But wat would they have done if there had been confetti and fans on the field

wheels405

They would have run another play.

sviraltp7101

I no but there would have been confetti and fans on the field

ssj2hydro

Overall some good looks for the second stringers. Thornton and Mack Wilson are positives as well as Myles Bryant as a returner and Shawn wade. Zappe looks like he has potential and hopefully we will improve. Tackling needs to be better and stopping the run

[deleted]

[удалено]

StonedWater

Can we cut from you from being a pats fan and this sub? your demeanor is off, you need to go

MankuyRLaffy

Bryant catching the ball as he began a sprinting stride was impressive, I see a lot of dudes be still when catching kicks but man started behind it and trotted towards it and broke off when the ball got in his hands.

iamgarron

Tyquon looks even faster than we thought Also Zappe is going to be a very solid backup in this league

fourpuns

I thought this too although Wilkerson also looked really fast so I’m a bit unsure.

scarypeep

is it just me or did zappe look pretty fucking good?

Mike00726

Nope. ONly made a good throw after the play broke down. didnt do anything good from the pocket.

CONSTANTIN_VALDOR_

I thought he looked thoroughly overwhelmed and wild for the 2nd quarter

Ohanrahans

I thought he looked pretty bad. He was struggling to make NFL-caliber throws, and the ball seemed to hang in the air a bit. I didn't see much upside there. He certainly made less of an impression in his preseason debut than guys like Mallett, Garopolo, and Stidham did in theirs.

AfterReview

Careful judging him against 2nd, 3rd and 4th stringers

AwsomeOne7

Think with a year or two sitting he could be a good piece for us

theMagatron

Looked much better after half time, but still had some odd throws like that interception. His arm is incredibly weak though, it seemed a lot of passes were under-thrown.

Clamdigger13

I think he was being timid after the int.

DatabaseCentral

Throwing short back shoulder is also safer than overthrowing.

cam7595

I was worried that the pace was a bit too quick for him in the first half. He really settled down in the second half. At first glance, solid looking back up if you ask me.

[deleted]

Once he settled in he was shockingly good

Konc3ited

Just you

AcidThunder

Wish we could of got a two minute drill at the end

AfterReview

Could have or could've. Not disrespecting, just correcting
