Colloquially called a Knysna Loerie.

gardvar

I thought that was their actual name, I was like "wtf is a Turako? this is a Loerie" thanks for confirming that. its been a long time since i was in SA almost thought I was remembering it wrong.

UsernameCheckOuts

Seriously? Is there an "English" word for loerie? I actually never thought of it as anything other than "loerie".

_curious_chris_

It was previously known as a Knysna Loerie but was changed a little while ago

Apocalypsis_velox

Still known as a Loerie! No rules for common names unlike scientific names. Just ignore the crazy ornithologist nonsense pissing on our heritage!

_curious_chris_

Viva le Loerie!

UsernameCheckOuts

That's even weirder. I'm going to Google this.

Flux7777

The English names all changed a while ago to more closely reflect genetic groupings.

DirndlKeeper

Official name changed for all types Loerie to Turaco a few years ago. Many birds had there names changed internationally at that time.

NuffingNuffing

Oh. Thanks for info.

JackOfAllMemes

Is it in the parrot family?

NuffingNuffing

Not that I know of, no.

ChristmasMint

Nope, turaco family. https://i.imgur.com/0L7KuL8.jpg

Flux7777

Colloquially is not really correct, because that's it's actual name in Afrikaans.

Grand_Cauliflower_88

Birds never disappoint. I never seen this kind. Beautiful. Nature was showing off n bragging when she designed n developed birds. Exotic colors really grab attention but I still really do live the everyday birds like sparrows, crows, the run of the mill guts hold just as much fasinatipn for me. Live to watch n listen to them.

lovethebacon

Even more so this bird is extremely difficult to spot in the wild. In the almost ten years I lived in the region they live I only spotted one and that was because it was in flight. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/166122911

JackOfAllMemes

They do blend in almost perfectly

Grand_Cauliflower_88

I can see why. I often will listen for calls then follow the sound to find a bird. I'm sure you probably have done that to. It blends in to green vegetation perfectly so that might be one where sound helps.

i-Ake

He knows he is fabulous, but he is humble about it.

_curious_chris_

Their moron wings are a sight to see, walking through the forest and a flash of red across your path is amazing

ChristmasMint

Maroon wings maybe?

K-O-L

I prefer moron wings.

_curious_chris_

Yes, I must learn to proof read
