The way I might do this is by having a "skirt" around the outside edge and use vertex painting to blend textures from the edge of the sidewalk into the terrain.

There is something called "material blending". I never used it, but I think it does what you want. It smoothens the transition between 2 meshes by merging them, without modifying the meshes.
